Dual diagnosis · Co-occurring care

Treat the addiction and the mental health needs affecting recovery.

Blue Springs Wellness provides SUD-primary dual diagnosis treatment for adults. Alcohol or drug use disorder remains the admitting and treatment focus while co-occurring mental health care is integrated when symptoms affect relapse risk, functioning, safety, or treatment engagement.

What dual diagnosis means

Two connected needs. One coordinated plan.

Dual diagnosis is a familiar term for a substance use disorder occurring alongside a mental health condition. It is also described as a co-occurring disorder. The symptoms can interact: anxiety may intensify cravings, depressed mood may reduce treatment participation, and trauma-related symptoms may increase avoidance or relapse risk.

Integrated care does not treat these concerns as unrelated tracks. The assessment and treatment plan connect co-occurring symptoms directly to substance use, recovery stability, relationships, daily functioning, and the skills needed to remain engaged in care.

Co-occurring needs may include

  • Depression that affects motivation, hope, or participation
  • Anxiety that contributes to avoidance, cravings, or use
  • Trauma-related symptoms that affect safety and relapse risk
  • Mood instability that disrupts functioning or recovery
  • Sleep, stress, and emotional-regulation concerns tied to SUD goals

Integrated care may include

  • Coordinated substance use and mental health assessment
  • One individualized treatment plan with connected goals
  • CBT strategies, DBT-informed skills, and motivational interviewing
  • Coordination with medical or psychiatric providers when clinically appropriate
  • Case coordination, relapse prevention, and transition planning

How care stays connected

Co-occurring treatment is built into the recovery process.

01

Assessment

The team considers substance use, withdrawal and relapse risk, health, emotional symptoms, functioning, readiness, and the recovery environment.

02

Treatment planning

Mental health goals are linked to cravings, emotional regulation, participation, relationships, and continued sobriety.

03

Clinical methods

Interventions are selected for the person and the plan, with SUD-focused groups and individual work at the center.

04

Ongoing review

Progress, safety, participation, symptoms, and medical necessity guide continued care and transitions between levels.

Levels of care
